Plastic Containers Fact and Fiction

In today's fast moving world, everyone is looking for convenience. Plastic containers offer more handiness than any other type of container made up of metal. Nowadays, plastic containers come in various shapes and sizes. Plastic containers are light weight and can fit easily under worktables and desks. They are strong, sturdy, easy to store up and simple to pile up.

The edges of the plastic containers are not strident as with the metal ones, so they do not cause grazes and cuts on hands. Furthermore, plastic containers are not expensively priced and easy to keep clean. The containers are also dish-washer friendly and compliant, with no uncertainties with regards to the containers being bent or curved. Metal containers are not microwave friendly as they cause sparks, plastic containers on the other hand is superior in this regard and is microwave friendly.

Foodservices commonly use containers which are plastic based. Polycarbonate, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene are the main contents of plastic containers and is of a non-hazardous nature. These containers are heavy-duty, and can tolerate temperature ranges from -40F. to 210F. The materials stated above each have varying properties; therefore different types are used for different purposes and outcomes.

Therefore, while choosing any plastic container, requirement for which that container is purchased, should be clear. Accordingly, shape, size and material, must be considered. Square containers are more useful for breads and sandwiches. They can be tightly stacked up. While round containers do not hold as much of product than their square counterparts, but because of their shape, they allow air to flow around them. Square containers don't permit that flow. Plastic containers also offer high portability.

But are these plastic containers really useful, with no side effects. No, is the answer. If you do not wash the plastic containers regularly, there is possibility of increasing harbouring of bacteria that may make you ill. Also, if the cooked food is kept for more than 10 hours, the food starts smelling. Reason is that chemicals from plastic container are transferred to cooked food. Though the quantity of these chemicals is really less and accepted by FDA, but for some delicate and extra conscious people, even these low quantities of chemicals do not work.

In short, plastic containers have both advantages and disadvantages. It depends on individual to individual, how they want to look at the glass, half empty or half full. The only suggestion is to use them wisely and according to the requirements.
