Culinary Institute of America Information

By Marsha Sanders

In most cases, individuals who go into the culinary industry have dreams of becoming a chef. If this is a dream of yours, then it would definitely be ideal for you to check out one of the top schools in the country, Culinary Institute of America. This culinary institution has developed some of the most well known chefs today in America.

Known through a different name in the past, the CIA was established in 1946. Currently 4 CIA campuses exist. Three of these campuses are situated in the United States, and one is situated in Asia, specifically Singapore. The flagship campus in Hyde Park was put up in 1970. In 1995 a second CIA campus was established in Greystone, California. In 2008, they opened a third campus in San Antonio, Texas. The first ever CIA international campus was established in 2010, in Singapore.

Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, and Wine & Beverages are the three major programs available at CIA. These programs are available in all the 3 campuses in the United States. However the Wine and Beverages program is only offered in the California campus. The degree programs offered in CIA campuses include certificate programs, associate's degree programs, and bachelor's degree programs. Choosing a suitable major and a degree is something you need to consider greatly to receive the ideal chef training you need.

CIA is undoubtedly one of the top cooking schools in America so they want to accept the most competent individuals and those who have had work experience in the food industry. Competition may be tough but with the right requirements and credentials, then you should be able to get in without any programs. The basic admission requirements to CIA include: High school diploma or GED, Several recommendations, Assessment tests, 6 months hands-on experience in a professional food/kitchen setting.

Different payment options are available to students. There are tuition installment plans that are essentially monthly payments that don't have any interest. With this students have a chance to pay for school in equal monthly payments. The cost of tuition differs depending on the location. CIA Hyde Park, New York campus costs about $13,000 to $16,000 per semester. St. Helena, California campus is about $14,000 and $16,000. San Antonio, Texas costs approximately $13,000 to $14,000 every semester.

As expected there are some dangers that you will encounter in the kitchen from sharp knives, hot pots, fires, and other things. But with extra care you shouldn't have any problems staying safe. Those who have just graduated from a program most likely won't get paid a high chef salary off the bat. After a few years of experience and proving yourself, your hard work will pay off. Becoming a chef may seem like a lot of fun but it is also a lot of hard work. If you want to enroll in the Culinary Institute of America, make sure that you are dedicated to it. In most cases many students end up quitting because they can't take the pressure. Remember, the harder you work, the more it will pay off for you.
