Repair Your Credit By Removing Tax Liens

By Willie Barnes

Tax liens can be one of the most troublesome things you can have showing up on your credit report or against your property. The IRS is quite powerful and they will take massive action to make sure that you pay them what you owe.

A tax lien on your credit report will prevent you from getting a home mortgage, car loans, student loans and even credit cards. An unpaid tax lien can show on your report for as long as 15 years but even if you pay it off it will show for 7 years or longer unless you dispute it.

In the majority of cases you will have to pay off the tax lien. There is no getting around it. However, it is occasionally possible to negotiate with the IRS and settle for a lesser amount than what you really owe. However, the IRS will hound you until you pay up or die and even then they will attach your estate. You have to pay your taxes, it is just a fact of life.

After you pay off the tax lien you will need to petition and dispute the negative listing on your credit report or it will stay with you for 7 years or longer. There are credit repair techniques that you can employ that can help you succeed it this.

In order to get a tax lien deleted from your credit report you must submit a dispute to the credit reporting agencies. Make sure you submit a duplicate dispute to all of the big three, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. You have the right to dispute any inaccurate or misleading credit because of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Learn about your rights and enforce them so that you can have peace in your financial future.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, any consumer has the right to dispute any listings that are listed on the report. False and inaccurate information is often reported on credit and if you have already paid a tax lien you can ask to have the negative listing deleted from your credit. You need to do this so that you can start with a clean score and move on.

Credit reporting agencies are private businesses that make profits by compiling information and selling it. As far as they are concerned whether that information is accurate or not is irrelevant. You are the only one who cares about your own credit report so you need to do something about negative credit by trying to repair it.

You can submit disputes and look for resolutions to repair your credit yourself or you can hire a professional credit repair company. Either way it isimportant to do it if you have negative credit showing up on your reports.
