The Postal Exam - Why It Matters

By Steve Oxseo

If you are preparing to take the Clerical Abilities Exam, or the post office exam, you probably already know that it is one of the first steps of the employment process and serves as only a portion of the whole application process that will take place. Typically it is the test that is given to individuals interested in clerical or data entry type work.

Scoring as high as you can on a test like this is essential if you want the job simply because there will be so many others you will have to compete against. This is why it is a good idea to get a score well above what they require as the minimum.

If you already know this you are probably left wondering what it is that you can do to ensure you score as high as possible on this test. Studying, as with any test, is very important. Try getting your hands on a good postal exam study guide and do as many practice problems as possible.

Never ever pay a huge price tag for something like a study guide, especially since one equally as good as that expensive one can easily be found with a much smaller price tag. The one thing you will have to watch for is that the guide you choose includes information on both the clerical and verbal parts of the test as well as problems you can practice along with. This hands on practice is best for retaining the most information in preparation for the test.

Studying is obviously the most important first step but when it comes closer to test time make sure your body and your mind are well rested. Only getting a few hours of sleep the night before because you studied all night is sure to back fire on you and only work against you.

Try to control your nervousness and anxiety as well. If you get too stressed prior to taking the test you might find yourself rushing during test time or not reading things clearly which will cause you to choose the wrong answer. Take deep breathes and relax! Instead of worrying the whole time about failing the test just go in and do it and be done with it.

Focus is very important while you are taking the test so don't get distracted by other things. If your stuck on a question don't start gazing out the window and definitely don't be worried about something that is going on at home at the money. Focus solely on the questions you need to answer and have faith in yourself and your abilities.
