One of the most common parasites your dog can be exposed to is heartworm. They can become very ill and treatment can be costly. However, prevention is easy and inexpensive in comparison to dealing with treatment, they can even die from it. The bite of mosquitoes can transmit larvae to the heart of your dog. When the larvae mature they can cause blockages in the heart. There are generic heartgard options for you to administer to your dog to prevent this condition.

Heartworm pills all serve the same purpose, to kill larvae and prevent them from maturing into adults in your dog's body. They come in a chewable form and are given monthly to prevent infestation. They are also available in a hard tablet that can be mixed in with food or in a liquid form.

The benefit of heartworm prevention is that it will work well and should be started when your puppy is as young as 12 weeks old.
