Choosing Efficient Freight Forwarders For Your Business

By Belinda Norbert

Freight forwarders are the key personalities in the movement of consigned cargoes from one country to another. These service providers work as facilitators in the complicated process of exporting and importing various types of merchandise. You can expect the forwarder to render professional assistance to private business owners, trade organisations, and export/import firms to smooth the progress of global trading operations.

Going back, the forwarder's primary job is to assist both exporters and importers in moving cargoes promptly and securely. Nearly all forwarders specialize in specific services, transport methods and market segments. In fact, these companies or individuals are often described as agents for global trading. The forwarder selects the most cost-effective itineraries and dependable carriers.

Business proprietors can save on financial resources by using forwarding agents for several reasons. These service providers are capable of orchestrating the transport of large quantities of deliveries. The forwarder can easily combine loads scheduled for one common destination to minimize freight charges for small traders. The practice requires a price comparison strategy involving multiple suppliers to determine the most reasonable cost and service.

Forwarders also provide minor industry-related services. These are working on paperwork required for customs clearances; payment of duties; processing of Bill of Lading and financial documents needed by banks; facilitation of insurance services and applying for claims; management of supply inventory; logistics; and, other value-added requirements.

Forwarders are also in charge of making payments and processing documents needed in this methodology. This job means that you have to update customers of the entire cycle every now and then. You have to gather data and prepare written reports that will be submitted to clients on a regular basis.

The freight forwarder may also be instructed by the client to facilitate payments for cargo shipments and collections of fees. Knowledge of electronic commerce systems, web-based technology and satellite monitoring techniques (GPS) is a must. Finally, forwarders can act as customs brokers, manage special arrangements for sensitive products, set up courier or specialized messenger services, and coordinate air or sea charters for heavy volumes of merchandise.
