The Right Dental Forceps For The Right Job

By Chloe Gib

There are American pattern dental forceps and there are English pattern forceps. The difference is in how the prongs at the connecting point are shaped. There tends to be greater variety and slant to the English pattern forceps. These tools have a seamless bolt which makes the instrument easy to clean, sterilize, and low maintenance.

The different shaped heads of these instruments are designed for the specific areas of the mouth. The head is shaped to fit closely to the specific shape of the tooth. Once the instrument is clamped down, the head grips the tooth more firmly allowing the dentist to apply more pressure to extract the tooth. This makes it easier to extract the tooth without worrying about the instrument slipping and causing the patient harm.

The equipment dentists use are also engineered to reduce the possibility of the hands slipping out of position when using them. These tools have also been created to assist the dental professional during an extraction and avoid any possibility of the device shifting out of place quickly and injuring the patient.

X-rays are a great way to give a dental professional an overall look at a patient's mouth. It'll help them make wise decisions for the extraction surgery. However, it's a one dimensional view and cannot show the doctor all of what is in the patient's mouth.

These instruments need to be able to employ a slow, steady force to ultimately release the tooth from its socket. Part of the job that these tools are to perform during an extraction is the cutting away of the ligament that helps to hold the tooth in place. Ligaments are extremely strong pieces of tissue that do their job of keeping bones connected, very well.

Once the ligament is broken however, it disintegrates more easily and does not usually heal completely. This is scenario is only positive when faced with the removal of a tooth. When the dental forceps grab the teeth, part of its job is to reduce the grip of the ligament on the tooth and bone.

The dental forceps used for the tooth extraction will not only grip the tooth tightly enough for a safe extraction, it will also cut away at the ligament with steady pressure. A great tool like this can make the whole operation go more smoothly and safely. The patient's safety is paramount in the design of these forceps and the best dentists use the best instruments.
