By Scott Resing

The role of a nurse is to help doctors during surgeries and assist patients daily with their needs in the hospital. Most often the next step is nurses becoming hospital managers or nurse managers. Hospital managers manage not only the medical staff in the hospital, but the non-medical staff too. Sometimes they are in charge of a small unit and sometimes they can head entire departments. Managing staff is a challenging career which requires not only nursing, but also excellent management skills, as well.

Managing a hospital is a constantly changing landscape. There are lots of job opportunities for persons who want jobs in administration and management. There is no need for a medical degree in order to become a hospital manager, but most people who do become hospital managers have some medical background. If you are a nurse who would like to become hospital managers are in a very good position.

What is the job of a hospital manager? Much of the hospital manager's job is taking care of the facilities, hospital staff and the patients. Hospital managers take care of the finances, hospital personnel, as well as the hospital's resources. The hospital manager is a man of various roles.

The hospital manager has to be a fiscal manager. This will entail being involved in the financial framework of the hospital; as well as hiring hospital staff. A fiscal background would be very valuable. A background in finance in even required by other insitutions of healthcare.

The hospital manager might also be a clinical manager. Nurses who understand a specific clinical area may be given the role of a manager of that facility. Managers in this capacity evaluate and processes and make recommendations. Their recommendations will help make the hospital more efficient.

Record keeping and maintenance is also another task which is performed by the hospital manager. One of the many changes today is the conversion of records into electronic data. Today, it is required for hospitals to have electronic record-keeping. This would need someone who is abreast with the changes in technology. It is the hospital manager's task to make sure that relevant information is given where they are due.

Managing a hospital is a task which not everyone is cut out for but it is indeed a job which is very rewarding. A degree in healthcare administration is required to become a hospital manager. Sometimes just a degree is not even enough, prior work experience is also needed to get a job. Previous work in a hospital setting can be gained while continuing further education. People who are already nurses should not find this very difficult. Let your superiors know that you are thinking of switching to a management job so that you will be the first person they will call when they need hospital managers.
