Housemaid-To Believe or Not to Believe the Letter of Recommendation of the Housemaid

By Alice Sy

The house maid always comes with a letter of recommendation when vying for another job and that letter is the tricky part. While the letter is technically composed of news, there are employers who assume that it contains gossip. In reality, the letter will be a good way for the employer to assess whether to hire the helper or not so handling it the best way is always one of the best moves.

Expect for the best but prepare for the worst. Don't ride on the band wagon of false assumptions. Think positive when it comes to recommendation letters. Today, truthful agencies still exist. Honest maids are around too. The world is not evil dominated. Excellent employer-employee still exists that most employers open heartedly recommend their employees, which includes these maids.

Verify the Truth. You always have a way to know the truth and you can make it come out. Start in dealing with the references; you may communicate with them freely if possible. Check on those records, request for statistics, data, anything signed by a 3rd party group aside from the maid or the agency. Chances are if you have been granted your requests, you're definitely on the right track.

Settle Doubts on the Interview. Based on your standards you are free to assess the honesty of the maid during the interview. Try to recall those important highlights in the letters and bring them up for verification, be observant on the way the maid's answer your questions. Check for consistency and transparency. Your instinct will readily tell you if there is something wrong or if every thing is perfect.

Always give a chance to the house maid by entertaining her letter, this is the bottom line. Hold those false assumptions first and always be careful on your judgments especially your reactions, regardless if the maid is guilty or not. You lose nothing by being kind hearted to the maid, in the end you only have a loyal and hard working ally to gain.
