What To Know About Colleges In Westchester

By Wendy Salas

If you live in New York and plan to stay local, colleges in Westchester are great options. Lives in Westchester comes with a great advantage because there are tons of excellent schools there. As a bonus, tuition is even cheaper if you stay in-state.

A lot of students these days are opting to stay local for financial reasons. After completing two years at a community college, they go on to get a Bachelor's Degree somewhere else. This way, they come out with the same level of education as their peers. But, they are $40,000 less in debt.

Colleges in Westchester offer just about any major. Some students study fashion. Other students study engineering. There is a major for everyone. You just have to know your passion.

Most local schools only offer Associate's Degrees. That is an important fact to know. Some problems could arise when it is time to transfer to a four-year university. Credits may not always be transferable. If that is the case, you will have to re-take all required courses that did not transfer. For this reason, you must plan ahead. Figure out what schools will accept all of the credits from the school you plan to attend now.

Concordia College is an example of a small local school. Others like Westchester Community College are fairly large. Students usually commute to school when they study local. You do have the choice of staying on campus if you would like. Mercy College is an example of a school that has dorms available for the students.

Pell Grants are for any student who demonstrates financial need. The Tuition Assistance Program, or TAP, is especially for New York, in-state students. These grants are a supplement to Pell Grants. TAP is another incentive for staying local. You will receive more financial aid.

Staying local may not be the best option for everyone. Some students feel the need to explore the world and different cultures right after high school. That feeling is totally valid. Other students just want to get away from home and be independent. That is totally understandable too. If you do go out of state and need more financial aid to pay for school, scholarships are available. There is literally a scholarship out there for everyone, from the A student to the star basketball player.

It is not hard to believe that students from all over travel to go to colleges in Westchester. With beautiful campuses and strong academic programs, the schools are definitely impressive.
