Reasons Behind Acne Scars And Their Treatment Methods

By Timothy Sanders

Acne is a nagging problem especially for women, with its sudden appearance and the lasting scars that it leaves behind. Irrespective of your abhorrence for it, acne occurs throughout the teenage years of almost everyone and a lot of effort is required for fighting these ugly looking scars and stopping them from reappearing.

When the sebum discharged by skin glands comes in contact with bacteria, it results in an infection, which is known as acne. When this infection is being healed, a protein called collagen is produced under the skin. When the collagen is in excess, there is a swelling and when its generation is low then it leads to tiny craters on the skin. Both these cases result in acne scars. Teenagers are normally the worst affected from acne as the hormone levels shoot up during puberty resulting in more sebum secretion.

Some of the usual factors that lead to an acne infection include intake of medicines, frequent use of oral contraceptives, applying beauty products that are not suited to the skin type and genetic reasons. A number of other reasons such as anxiety, unhealthy eating habits, and even pollution can result in acne. However, there is no scientific proof behind the widespread misunderstanding that acne is caused by oily food.

Irrespective of the variety of herbal products that claim to heal acne and that are offered to consumers at different stores, it is advisable to get a doctor's opinion if the situation gets worse or if it keeps on recurring. It is also better not to poke the lesion with sharp- edged objects or to put any kind of pressure on it as it makes the acne get worse.

A growing number of people are also resorting to cosmetic treatments to get rid of acne scars and to get back a spotless skin. Surgery and laser treatment are among the most successful ways of permanently getting rid of acne scars, but a lot of other new treatments are also available these days. You must take suggestions from a reputed skin doctor who would be able to identify your skin type and suggest a proper remedy accordingly.
