Silver.Ag Manual: Cleaning Silver Necklace

By Jan Pavlik

Anyone who has any type of silver jewellery will know that this type of metal can become tarnished and can begin to wear out over time. If you have a silver necklace that you would like to keep in tiptop condition, then there are lots of different things that you can do in order to keep it clean.

Probably the most simple method of keeping your silver necklace clean will be to get a toothbrush and simply rub and scrub the necklace with white toothpaste. Once you have done this then you can rest off the toothpaste using warm water and then use a cloth in order to give the necklace a bit of a polish. If you do this regularly then the necklace should remain very clean and shiny.

You could also make a cleaning paste using three parts baking soda and one part water. Scrub the necklace using this paste, rinse it in hot water, and then wipe it down. As an alternative to this you could simply soak the necklace in hot water to which you have added some baking soda for about five minutes.

Another possible solution when trying to clean your necklace will be to put a sheet of aluminium foil, the necklace itself, and a few inches of water into a dish or pan. To this add two tablespoons of baking soda and then boil for about five minutes. Remove and rinse off the necklace, and then buff it until it looks shiny.

If you are not looking to use some sort of home method in order to clean your necklace you could also go out and purchase a polish. All you need do is choose a viable product and then follow the instructions on it.

Each one of these methods should be suitable when you are looking to clean your necklace.
