Aromatherapy - What you need to know

By Victor Moldey

As soon as you delve more into the topic of aromatherapy, you will realize that it is quite a practical and simple practice, even if you thought it to be strange and mysterious before. Essentially, it does the same thing as an air freshener, which most people use regularly, but is a more sophisticated approach. There has been research done that has revealed that various smells can have a significant impact on our brains and feelings, which translates into the multiple benefits of aromatherapy, some of which will be discussed in this article.

When referring to aromatherapy, most people envision the release of the smell of an essential oil, usually through vaporization. There are many simple and cheap ways to do this. The candle vaporizer is one approach, which basically involves a bowl, sitting over a candle, which holds the essential oil mixed with some water. An even simpler technique is to simply place a few drops of the essential oil into a bowl of water that's been boiled. These are just a few of the methods you can use to permeate the air with the fragrance of essential oils, but there are other devices available for purchase, such as diffusers, which are believed to perform better.

There are lots of people whose skin care regimen involves the use of aromatherapy, whether they want to keep their skin looking young and fresh or to treat various problems like eczema or acne. Even if you have never heard of aromatherapy, you've likely bought products that contain some of the best skin care essential oils, which include lavender, clary sage and tea tree oil. One reason people prefer to use essential oils to treat their skin is because they know exactly what they are getting, rather than the long list of ingredients and chemicals contained by most drugstore products.

Aromatherapy is an excellent way to get into a meditative state, which is necessary if you like to meditate or engage in yoga, tai chi, visualization or self-hypnosis. You may have to experiment and find out which essential oils have the most calming effect on your mind. You can use the right fragrance to increase your concentration on a particular activity or to help you meditate, much like you do when you play relaxing music in the background.

There are plenty of excellent reasons to start exploring the world of aromatherapy. You have many choices as far as how you want to practice it, or which essential oils you want to use. There is little reason to start with something complicated. All you need to get started is a bottle of essential oil, something you prefer in terms of smell, and a diffuser of some sort. Even though we've looked at both practical and interesting issues, there is still a lot more to learn, which you can do if you find aromatherapy interesting.
