Producing Plastic Products With Injection Molding Equipment

By Howard Vardenatte

Injection molding can be described as manufacturing process where the granules of plastic are heated until they are melting and then they are forced into the particularly designed mold. When in the mold, the plastic is allowed to cool and hardens into the form of the mold. This kind of molding is frequently used in industrial field for producing plastic artifacts like toys, computer casings, and cookware.

Moreover, injection molding offers many advantages in most plastic items. The process is utilizing injection molding equipment. Actually, the process of injection molding is simpler, more versatile, more reliable, and also most effective than most other injection molding types. At this time, this article is going to give some good info about some equipment that is used in the process of injection molding.

The first equipment that becomes the key part of injection molding is called as the barrel. This is actually a metal cylinder which houses the reciprocating screw. The barrel can be used to empty the plastic granules through the hopper and while in the barrel the combination of heat from heaters and friction from reciprocating screw liquidizes plastic pellets. The injection nozzle is at the end of the barrel, by which molten plastic is injected into the mold.

The second equipment is called reciprocating screw. This equipment sits inside the barrel of injection molding device. It rotates and forces plastic pellets through the barrel and into the mold. In the visual appeal, it is roughly cylindrical, tapering slightly to the point at one end. The outer area of this equipment is shaped into the screw thread.

The third equipment is called hopper. It is used in keeping plastic granules before they are entering the barrel. It has a large funnel into which plastic granules are deposited before they are entering the barrel.

The fourth equipment is known as heater. This heater sits around the barrel and raises the temperature of plastic granules to the point in which they are melting. It enables the molten plastic to be injected into the mold. The heater sits wrapped around the cylinder and it is derived by electricity.

The next equipment is the mold. The mold and the corresponding mold cavity can decide the final shape of injection molded artifact. You must know that there are specific limitations on the mold design and the molded artifacts design which is caused by the need of being able to remove artifact when it has solidified.

The final equipment is mobile platen. Platen is identified as a mobile flat plate which is employed for driving the mold and the mold cavity together. It ensures that molten plastic migrates to every area of the mold and mold cavity. The platen is kept in the place against the mold by the clamp.
