Storage Problems? Organize your Closet

By Greg Hansward

Is your closet in need of organization? Closets are most commonly used for clothing but they can also be used to store other things that are unsightly. Since a closet can be closed up and out of sight, it invariably gets cluttered and unorganized. Here are some tips and ideas for having an organized closet that will serve more than just a place to hide your junk.

First of all, you should take everything out of your closet. Sort through the contents and throw away what you don't need. This can be difficult for packrats but if you haven't used an item of clothing for a year then it's a good idea to get rid of it. Unwanted items can be given away to charitable organizations who will give you a receipt for tax purposes. Then figure out what items around the house you would like to store in your closet. Once you know what you want in your closet you'll be able to decide what organization materials you'll need.

Complete closet systems are available for standard closets. They can be customized and have adjustable racks and shelving. If you have an odd shaped closet or you have needs that are beyond basic then you may need to have a custom organize made by a professional.

There are some things that will help organizing easier. Shoe racks come in a variety of sizes and styles. If your clothing space is limited then don't purchase ones that hang from the clothing rack. Instead, purchase racks that sit on the floor. The most useful ones are the flat variety that has two or more shelves. If you don't have enough shoes to fill the rack then other items can be placed on it.

If you have drawers in your closet then consider buying drawer organizers. These are generally just inexpensive plastic open boxes. They will help you sort your hosiery and other items that can get messy.

Large coats can take up too much room in your closet. Instead of putting them all on hangers, place rarely used ones in sealable tubs and store them on a shelf or under your bed. During the summer store all of your winter wear to allow more space for you warm weather clothes.

Have enough durable hangers for your clothes. Doubling up on hangers will create a mess when you're digging through your closet. If your hanging space is limited then buy hangers that can hang multiple garments in a tiered fashion.

Lastly, look up in your closet and see if there is more room for additional shelving. This is usually wasted space and it takes very little time and effort to install shelving.

With a little time and money you can have a closet that is organized free of clutter.
