Networking~Network Terms~Phrases~Keywords~Buzz Words~Words~Terminology Explained~Detailed~Unleashed~For Dummies

By Jenny Marcia Irwin

Here we are going to cover some of the most common networking terms you may come across.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This is the most common form of broadband in the UK where the upload speed is less than the download speed.

IP Transit - internet transit hosted by an ISP.

Atom is like traditional RSS, but with more options. Atom is still in development, but catching on. It is also an XML based specification like RSS.

Bandwidth - The total of information you can send through a connection. This is commonly measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or kilobits per second (Kbps).

Blog - just like an online diary. Often updated at least once a week and normally roughly daily and are ordered chronologically in order.

Broadband refers to a connection which has more bandwidth than a modem, and tends to be a very generic term with no specific speed attached to it, but will always mean a connection to the internet rather than LAN connection.

Co-location- where an ISP hosts an individual or company's server or hardware on their behalf.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration protocol distributes IP addresses dynamically to clients on a network.

DNS - Domain Name System, used to translate domain names into IP address, with a DNS server providing the translation service.

Domain name - all websites have a unique domain name. They have several parts to them, the first being the actual name like my site and then the second half being the top level domain like .com or . co.uk etc and their parts are always separated by dots.

Ethernet - a standard networking method via a LAN, with varying speeds.

Firewall- protection from malicious network traffic.

FTP - File transfer Protocol, a method used to upload and download files on the internet.

A host is a computer or client on a network that provides services to other computers or clients on the same network.

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol allows hypertext files to be transfered to and from and across the internet. HTTP is best known for loading websites.

IMAP is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by email clients in communicating with email servers. IMAP allows for email to be accessed and manipulated on a remote server. So messages can be deleted, have their status changed, multiple mail boxes can be managed, etc.

IPv4 - Internet Protocol version 4, is the most widely used version of the internet protocol. IPv4 has a maximum of four billion IP Numbers (technically 232) but due to the way it was designed this is actually less than that due to some inefficiencies.

IPv6 is a new technology that allows for a greater amount of IP addresses.

LAN - Local area network, commonly used in small organisations.

Network - two or more computers connected to share services and resources.

Where would I find these services? An transit company would be able to cater for most of the services above.
