By Alexandra Wong

While almost everyone has heard of the world renowned fashion brand DKNY, not many know about the creator Donna Karan. While she is now worth half a billion dollars, she had very humble beginnings on long island.

From an early age she was able to learn about fashion design and clothing manufacturer from her father who was a tailor and she began to sell clothing at the age of 14 in Long Island. After graduating from a design college she then went on to become an assistant designer for the fashion brand Anne Klein, she quickly worked her way up to being a managing designer and then took over as head designer when Anne Klein passed away.

Before long Donna Karan decided to set up on her own and created the Donna Karan brand, her first collections showing shortly after. The label quickly grew as a prestigious collection thanks to its flagship stores in London and New York before expanding into other market sectors of the fashion industry with its DKNY range.

The DKNY range has achieved worldwide acclaim for providing high quality clothing at affordable prices for the younger generation. The brand has a significant presence in clothing but also other lines such as fragrances, accessories and watches.

The brand's success has been down to Donna Karan's vision and understanding of the fashion, she's been able to mix the luxury style and elegance of her prestigious "Donna Karan" range with an affordable range that are desired by young women all over the world. Being able to own a piece of DKNY clothing or jewellery is a luxury that the younger generation desire.

Donna is now in her 50s and no longer owns the controlling share of the company, however the brand continues to produce a range of clothing and designer watches that reflect the youthful ideas of the company, essential to the company's success. With the aggressive expansion of authorised retailers and flagship stores the brand continues to succeed.
