Silver.Ag: Forms Of Anklet Jewelry

By Jan Pavlik

Jewelry and accessories for female feet has been a common practice in India, Egypt, and the Middle East for centuries, and these vary from henna art to anklet bracelets. Ankle chains, or commonly known as anklet, also became popular in the West in the late twentieth century, and remain as distinct fashion statements today.

The different designs for anklets can be categorized as inflexible and flexible designs, depending upon a jewelry artisan's preference for style. Both of these types hold a place in popularity because the anklet in itself is a very unique piece of accessory that is not commonly seen everywhere. There are some anklets that combine gold and silver with semiprecious or precious stones, as well as different chains that join toe rings to the anklet, giving it that whole fancy effect. There are also some ankles that are simple and lower cost materials such as those made from plastic beads and nylon, making a fashion statement all on their own with the younger generation.

Inflexible ankle bracelets are simply sheets of metal, whether gold, silver, brass or copper, that are flattened out and given shape before adding intricate designs or semiprecious stones. Some inflexible anklets look like ankle cuffs as they cover a larger area, and some look like the wrist bangle that fits around the ankle to give a type of "slave" effect when worn.

The flexible chain or rope designs are more common in fashion, and many jewelry designers have been adventurous in playing with the possibilities to create different looks for this version of foot accessory. Some designs can be so powerfully solid looking that they almost seem like the inflexible cuff anklets, covering more area around the ankle than the thinner bracelet pieces.

The accents added to most anklets are there to catch attention or to make a statement, as sometimes these are also fitted with tiny little bells to give a tinkling sound when walking. This is somewhat sexually alluring to observers as they cause attention to be given to the wearer when she walks by. Contemporary fashion usually finds these foot accessories being worn to accent short, summer outfits and pretty footwear. They are also used to add statement to formal wear that requires little to no accessory, but still needs to have that extra unique touch that attributes elegant distinctive taste to the wearer.

These unique jewelry pieces have become popular as they accent the legs in feet, which are commonly not accessorized. Whether they are plain or ornamented, anklets always serve their purpose of drawing attention mainly because of their uncommon location.
