The answer I believe from personal experience is that yes, the internet can be used and is very powerful for building a business, but there are some things the internet cannot replace. There is no question that you still need to be prepared to do traditional network marketing, i.e. personally calling/meeting your prospects, especially those who show an interest in joining your business.

What with Skype and other cheap, easy phone services there is no excuse to not call a prospect every again; wherever they are in the world! We also have videos and emails which can be written or produced just once and read/watched thousands of times. There really is some serious potential.
Increased earning potential is another great thing about online marketing, with so many systems available and a mass of potential prospects the cheques can soon add up. If you are worried about insufficient technical knowledge or think you have to be some kind of a guru then you don't need to be concerned. There are systems available built on the principles of attraction marketing that will do a lot of the leg work for you. Most will be already set up with several affiliate income streams, so you can in theory start earning pretty quickly.
Whats the best way to market your business online, what's the process?
Well it's surprisingly uncomplicated
1) Your first task is to set up a marketing system, preferably one that is based on the principles of offering value to your prospects and building your primary business on the back end.
2) The next thing is to learn how to generate traffic to that sales funnel. Most people seem to get hung up on this point. You usually have a 'capture page' where visitors can enter their name & email address in exchange for something you are offering which is of value to them (i.e. an ebook, video training course)
3) Once in your system they will start receiving information from you, usually delivered by email. They start to see you as a bit of an expert in your field, plus they start to like & trust you. This is important as these people are becoming your 'warm' market and are much more likely to buy from you and want to work with you personally.
4) You promote products occasionally that are useful and of good value to your prospects. Some people will start to buy from you (often on complete auto pilot).
5) Offer information about your business opportunity. Hold a presentation of your own and invite your prospects to attend, then follow up on the telephone with those who are interested, alternatively send them to a presentation done by your company.
It isn't uncommon for people on your list to actually call you and ask about your business. This happens to me quite often, in fact I've had people call me and ask me about my primary IMMEDIATELY after they join my e-mailing list!
