By Marissa Velazquez

An assistant photographer is someone who has all the skills and knowledge necessary to help a pro photographer set up a specific shoot. If you are a pro photographer based in Miami, you will be able to choose from a large number of excellent photo assistants in Miami.

In the past a photographers assistant will be involved in loading, unloading and processing film as well as other tasks depending on the shoot. However, these days more and more photographers have gone digital so the role will demand computer related skills. This includes setting up computers for digital capture, uploading from flash cards and work in Lightroom and Photoshop.

The ability to set up and use lighting equipment is another essential skill that a photographer's assistant needs to possess. They need to know how to use strobe lighting and know how to set accurate exposures and understand colour temperature. They need to be familiar with the studio environment and know how to use backdrops for various types of shoot. They should also know how to set up equipment on location. Landscape and architectural photographers sometimes need the help of assistant too.

Despite the digital photography revolution, many photographers still work in film or a combination of the two. Many photographers prefer film because they feel that the colours are more accurate, or if they want a more filmy quality in the final images.

Having skills in film photography as well as digital photography gives a photo assistant a distinct advantage. The ability to be able to scan film using a dedicated film scanner is another very useful skill to have. This requires a good understanding of colour management and computer knowledge.

Most of the big name photographers started their career as an assistant photographer. This is due to the high level of knowledge and experience that is gained "hands on" when working with a professional photographer and photographic studio. This kind of experience is far more useful than academic training, although fine art photographers will benefit from learning about fine art and the history of photography.

However, it is difficult to get a job as photo assistant without prior experience, which produces a Catch 22 situation. Therefore, attending a photography working or training course is a great way to get the necessary skills. A photo assistant will also benefit from having a strong portfolio of their own photographic work that demonstrates that they can produce excellent images in a good variety of shooting situations.
