Having a low self-image is among the most difficult things to change, and the lack of self-esteem is among the heaviest anchors holding you back from realizing your true potential. However, it is not impossible to boost your self-esteem as this post will show. The main thing it is going to need is courage!
When you're in a rut of constantly putting yourself down, and you genuinely believe that everybody else is smarter, prettier, and stronger than you are, there will not be an overnight fix to increase your self-esteem. You've been telling yourself that everyone else is better than you for too long. What you need to find the courage to do is to hear these voices in your head, and then learn how to dismiss them. Just because, you can hear the words, doesn't make them true.
Keep a journal, a cheap notebook is suitable - it is for documenting your thoughts, not for public display. On the very first page write a list of positive things regarding yourself. Start each one on a new line with the words "I am ...." - For example, "I am kind." "I am helpful." "I am compassionate" "I am well organized". For someone with low self-esteem, this will not be an easy list to compile, so keep it as an ongoing project and add to the list each time you consider something else that is positive about yourself.
In the journal make a short entry every evening about the good things you have done that day - whether it was to smile at a lonely looking old lady in the grocery store, or you held a door open for a mother with small children. Make a note of any volunteer activities you do, or money you give to fund raisers. When you pay your bills on time, write it down. When your check book balances, record that accomplishment. When you read a book, or newspaper, make a note of it. All of this shows your positive attributes.
The journal is not just for the moment that it is written. It has another purpose. On the days when you feel that your self-esteem is low, read through your entries. See how often you read the newspaper and keep up-to-date with what's happening in the world, see how many times you have made someone else's day a little brighter, read the evidence of how you are a good person! You wrote it so it has to be true.
This will take time. To raise your self-esteem is to change your value set in regards to yourself. You need to record what you've done that's good so that you could read it later, you need to stop yourself from listening to that voice which tells you that everybody else is better, and you should keep telling yourself that you're just as good as the next person. Learn to acknowledge and respect yourself for the person you are and you'll raise your self-esteem.
