Saving the Earth from Global Warming

By Nia Lawrence

Modernization, advancements in technology, as well as humanity certainly bring a lot of advantages and corresponding disadvantages to the environment. Global warming is one environmental dilemma brought about by human activities and modernization. Although it's sad to know that a lot of people prefer to be oblivious about this problem, there are now efforts aimed at saving the environment from further environmental destruction. Green projects and investments are being done to initiate changes in human deeds that cause damage to the environment. Researches about increasing and developing forestry yields are also started. All things considered, more and more people nowadays are being mindful of environmental rehabilitation.

Fast fact: For every single tree cut down, there is a corresponding increase in the carbon dioxide level in the air. Why is this so? This is mainly because trees absorb carbon dioxide. Without trees, what do you think can absorb all those carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the air? Cutting down trees will just aggravate pollution and global warming. Industrial revolution and man's activities both have roles in the increased level of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the air. Also, plants provide ecological balance. We all know that they are a key player in the carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen; humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Plants also clean the air we breathe by absorbing greenhouse gases and other particles. Without plants, what would be our natural and clean source of oxygen? Since there have been a great increase in population, advancements in technology, and human activities in the past years, we need trees now more than ever.

As trees are good absorbers of greenhouse gases, reforestation is a good way to fight global warming. Aside from combating the effects of global warming, tree planting has other advantages. With reforestation, we can clean and purify the air we breathe. They can also provide a natural shelter and ecosystem for wildlife. Moreover, reforestation can increase harvest yields.

Other green projects are also started aside from reforestation. There are a lot of environmental remediation techniques available to help remove pollutants and contaminants from soil, water, and air. Let us take soil as an example. We are aware that no vegetation can thrive or do well in contaminated soils. To be able to use these contaminated lands again, we can do soil remediation strategies to bring back the soil's natural health and minerals. We can increase soil fertility by revitalizing and purifying the soil. Composting and correcting the soil's pH level are only some of the ways to remediate the soil.

Global warming is no simple problem. It doesn't have a single and simple solution. However, by integrating our environmental efforts such as reforestation and soil remediation services, slowly but surely, we can fight the worsening case of global warming throughout the entire planet.
