Are There Really Any Short-cuts to Success?

By Joe Mangano

There is an old saying, "there are no short-cuts on the road to success". I'm sure you have heard it, too! what would you say if I could demonstrate to you a method to shorten your journey?

Pay close attention, because this is a 2 part process that relies on the powerful idea of 'reciprocity'. This is one of the strongest sales tips that may accelerate your career.

I want you to identify 2 folks. First, somebody you would consider the 'most successful' person in your company. Second, somebody you would consider 'less successful' than you.

Now, set-up two conferences. You may meet with one person before work starts and one after work. Ideally, this could be done on the self same day.

Part One. For the 'most successful' person meeting, prepare a time with them before their day starts. The earlier, the better, because that way they're not distracted by telephones, meetings or paperwork. Offer to meet them at their fave cafe. Bribe them with gourmet coffee, if that what it takes. You are buying their time and expertize! Make sure they know that you consider them to be very successful and you would like to learn from them and get some guidance.

Now, get ready to take some truly good notes.

Ask them the following 3 questions:

- What is it that makes you so successful?
- What was the most important challenge you had to overcome and how did you do it?
- What 3 success recommendations would you give me?

As you go through your day, consider the recommendations you received. Try doing one, that way you are reinforcing what you just learned!

Part Two. For the other meeting, plan to meet them in their 'favorite after work place'. This is an informal meeting, and should be really social by design. Remember, ideally, this may be done on the same day as your earlier meeting. Why? Because the information is still fresh in your mind!

During the course of conversation, let them know that you had this actually interesting conversation with (the 'successful' person) and you received 3 really valuable recommendations that you are planning on implementing. Ask, if they would be interested in being told about them?

If you're excited about what you learned today, that will influence the other person to be more engaged with you. They are going to learn something, and you'll feel good about teaching them!

3 Reasons explaining why this process works.

- You learned 'success recommendations ' from an expert in your field.
- You had the chance to implement 1, that very same day and this is great re-strengthening.
- You helped share your learning with another person and helped them as well. Oh, BTW, the 3rd part helps bolster the learning into your own mind more.

This is the power of 'reciprocity'. It actually is probably one of the strongest career sales tips that may help you in achieving your goals faster and simpler!
