Is it cost effective to build your own business websites?

Before we get started, take a second to ask yourself these questions. To begin with, what is your situation? and secondly, what is the site for?

Getting a basic business website designed and created isn't the hardest thing that you can ever do in your life. This isn't to say that web design is easy, creating a successful website generally takes a lot of understanding and time but if you aren't aiming your sights too high then you could accomplish this without hiring a professional.

To be effective at creating a web site you should ideally be the kind of person who can pick things up quite fast and also be adept at understanding new systems. This is frequently highly applicable to people that own or run a business. The fundamental web design subjects that ought to be studied are; HTML, CSS and design fundamentals. For technical type people, it is often very tempting to skip straight in without considering the design aspect of your site. How a website looks on the internet will have a direct perception of a business so making sure that time is spent considering design as well as function is very significant. Are you a sole trader such as an electrician or a cleaner that just needs to set up a web presence so that people in your local area searching online for your type of services can find your contact details and pick up the telephone? If this suits your kind of business then a very basic website is probably sufficient for your needs and it is realistic that you can achieve this by building your website yourself.

If your business falls in to what is deemed to be a more professional class of business such as a law firm or a training provider then a basic looking website might not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to see. If this fits your situation then it might be fitting for you to stick to running your business and to let a professional web designer develop a professional looking website for you.
