Executive Coaching Is The Way To The Top

By Tom Doerr

While Mr. Bill Gates may not have had an Executive Coach per se, it is virtually guaranteed that he sought lots of advice and was mentored here and there on his way to the top of the personal computer industry. If you were to ask any successful business leader if they reached their acme by themselves, all of them telling the truth would say, no.

While it may be true that someone somewhere in business may have made it to the pinnacle of achievement without any outside help, that situation would be extremely rare. At some time or other along the way someone gave them advice or mentored them in some substantial ways. Without that help, Carnegie, Gates and Walton probably would not today be familiar names in business.

All of us have pluses and minuses. We work within those parameters. Our pluses are our comfort zones, and we often work to hide our weaknesses. The smart leader seeks out the right executive coach who will help them better utilize pluses and turn the weaknesses into strengths as well.

Swimmer Michael Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals won in a single Olympics, a total of eight won in 2008. Michael Phelps did not make it to the top in swimming on his own. Certainly he had loads of innate talent, but coaching, excellent coaching, showed him and led him on the route to the top of his game. Coaches are important in sports, and they are vital in business, too.

Given any random group of people in a business, a true leader will be able to get the best out of all of them. A single style of leadership cannot achieve this outcome. Leaders must have the skill of situational leadership. An Executive Coach can help business men and women with any number of skills, from strategic thinking to interpersonal communication, to dealing effectively with conflict. These are but a few areas of potential focus.

The modern business world is fraught with competition. Businesses are thriving, just getting by, or dying based on the decisions made by their leaders. Business Coaching may make the difference between going to the top, or oblivion. Your sure first positive step is to hire an Executive Coach.
