Building Your Own Small Business Website.

By Kenneth Innes

It need not be costly to have a professional build a small business website for you and in theory the website will soon pay for itself in the income it generates from new sales. You might be thinking about building your own website but not sure where to start. Ask yourself these questions. Primarily, do you have the time needed to dedicate to putting a website together? and secondly what would you like your new website to do for you?

It is not impossible to build your own basic website for your business. Not that I am suggesting web design is a piece of cake.. it is however something in which you can gain fairly goodresults with a little applied learning and study.

If you are the type of person who grasps and learns new skills easily, you could be good at making your own website. You will need to acquire a few essential skills before you start, including CSS, HTML and basic web design and layout.

We come to our first question and the root of it. Do you actually have enough spare time on your hands to materialize these skills?

Perhaps you are fed up of working for others and plan on developing your own business, so you are happy to invest time into this project. Get yourself online, hit some tutorial sites, log in to Amazon and purchase the latest 'Build Your Own Website' book. You will find a range of material to steer you.

Perhaps however your circumstances are different. Perhaps you are already aware there are not sufficient hours in the day. Building your own business website in this situation is not going to do you, your business or your personal life any favours and if you aren't able to concentrate on what you are trying to accomplish then the finished product isn't going to do your business justice.

Secondly, you need to ask yourself. What do you hope your new website will accomplish for you? Whilst thinking about this it would be a worthwhile exercise to take a look at other websites for your direct competitors.

If you run a small business as a gardener or electrician for instance, a basic website with your contact details enabling individuals to find you and give you a call may totally meet your needs. Building this type of basic website would be fully manageable.

Your Business type may come under what is deemed to be a more professional category such as accounting, law or finance. In which case a basic site may not give your clients the right first impression of your business. Do a Google search for some search terms that you want to have a website ranking for. What is the level of competition in your field? Take a look. If you find that the standard is above what you can realistically achieve then seeking a professional web designer may be the better decision for your business.

To summarise all of the above; If you have the time to learn to build your website and you think that you can achieve a high enough standard then give it your best shot, if you are not sure then hire a professional. One last thing you will need to think about is that once you have your site, it will not benefit your business if nobody can find it on Google. You need your website to be at the top of the search ranking in order for it to be a success.

If you are a small business owner and you don't have some sort of web presence to promote it then you are missing out on key potential customers and sales. You can create your own website for your business, but you need to carefully consider whether you think the results you could achieve would generate more sales and work out whether you really do have the time to teach yourself how to do it.
