Are You Looking For A New Job? Will You Pass The Background Check?

By Quinn Harris

These days, companies want to get more information about those people they hire. Companies know that bad hiring decisions can cost them a lot.

This is why majority of employers run background checks on their potential employees.

When doing a background check, the hiring company will take a close look at your personal and professional history. Your education and past employments will be checked, and they will check if there is a criminal activity in your record and talk to your references. Some companies even check the driving record, credit history, and past drug testing results.

This means that the company will need some very specific information from you. For example, they need contact information for your former employers and the names of your previous supervisors.

Now these information will not be present on a resume. So companies have candidates fill out a job application that is specifically designed to get the information that's required to run a complete background check.

You should know that it's important that you fill out the job application right so you will get the job. In fact, over 80% of companies say that discrepancies on a job application can take a candidate out of consideration.

When you fill out a job application, you have to make sure that the information is complete and verifiable. But there can be lots of situations that can cause an applicant many problems. Here are a few.

What kind of contact information do you provide for a former employer that has gone out of business?

If you worked for a company through a temporary agency, who do you list as the employer?

If you were fired from your previous job, should you leave it off the application?

How you answer questions like these will make a big difference. Human resources would usually warn against hiring a person whose information isn't complete.

If you want to get a job, you must have a good resume, strong interviewing skills, and a positive attitude. These tools will get you in the door and help you make the final cut.

But if you don't pass the background check, you won't get the job.

So take the time to prepare the information that will go on your job application. It's one of the best things you can do in your job search.
