The Different Dog Breeds

By Jade Davidson

Dogs at present can be found in just about all shapes and forms, it is regarded as as a result of a significant part of evolution, which took place more than 15,000 yrs ago - The Taming of the Grey Wolf. Scientists today believe each dog breed is really a descendant of the "Canis Lupus" - the "Grey Wolf".

The scientists believe that because humans and grey wolves were both hunters, they have existed together. Then mankind have decided finally that they needed to tame these wolves. This has been copied by man throughout time and they have somehow began to breed. Naturally, they selected the ones that are friendly towards them and have trained them to do work to help humans.

The dogs now are divided into seven major categories:

Hounds - These type of dogs were first trained to be hunting dogs. They used to hunt with their sight and smell. Some of the examples are beagle and bloodhounds. The whippet and the greyhound are regarded as sight hounds.

Working Dogs - Across the hundreds of years these types of dogs were uniquely bred for being guards and search and recovery dogs.

Terrier - These dogs were highly conditioned to help look for tracking vermin. They are brave and tough, and will pursue fox, badger, rat, and many different others above and beneath the ground.

Gundogs - These dogs were originally trained to search for live game and get those that were shot and hurt. These category is divided into 4 groups - retriever, spaniels, hunt, point, retrieve, and setters. Some of the breeds are capable of performing similar work as the other sub categories.

Pastoral - These are herding dogs that will work with cattle, sheep, reindeer and also other animals. These dogs usually have element resistant double coat to protect it from the weather when they are doing work in difficult circumstances.

Utility - This class includes miscellaneous kinds of dog primarily of a non-sporting origin. The title "Utility" essentially means health and fitness for a function and also this group includes an exceptionally combined and diverse bunch, most breeds previously being carefully bred to execute a particular function not part of the sporting and working classes.

Toy - This breed are termed as toy dogs since they are very small and can be carried anywhere. They were just bred to be constant companions of many people.
