To become a professional in the beauty industry it is advisable to first attend a cosmetology school East Lansing or other locations. Programs offered at these schools will train individuals to perform various tasks such as hair, make-up, facials and nails.

While a person entering education in this field will be trained on all areas of cosmetology, it is advisable that they choose a concentration that is of most interest. Common specialties include hair styling, make-up applications and facials or manicures and pedicures. It is possible for a person to have more than one area of specialization, although this may require additional education.

Every state has different requirements for becoming certified in this field. It is recommended that the individual research the qualifications necessary in the state for which they live. A license from an accredited school is required to practice cosmetology. Individuals must pass an application and written exam.

The typical length of education in this field is about one year if a person choose to go full time. Individuals must complete their training at a board certified cosmetology school. In some instances programs are offered to high school students. This is advantageous because the student can receive a high school diploma and cosmetology license simultaneously. Course content will focus on techniques of styling, as well as the proper mixing of chemicals and application. Once education is complete it is recommended that the person work as an apprentice in a salon.
