New York Free Arrest Records

By Ben Kingsley

New York has implemented the Freedom of Information Act. This implementation has turned the personal documents of the residents into open files which mean that the residents have the freedom to access their documents at any moment. NY criminal records are only one of the name documents that the residents can request.

The arrest records of New York are only one of the many types of criminal files that the state issues to its residents. One can get an arrest report if the laws of the state and nation have been violated. Law enforcing agencies of the state such as the police department, sheriff's office and the traffic department can issue an arrest if necessary. A person can have several arrest records coming from those mentioned agencies. One can then get a copy of an arrest record directly from the office that issued or made the report.

An arrest record would contain information about the arrest of an individual. One would find the case number, date and place of arrest as well as the crimes that the individual has committed that lead to his arrest. The document would also show the personal details of the individual such as the birth details, address of residency and other significant information about the individual. One would know the status of the case and the outcome of the arrest. The charges that were filed against the individual as well as the sentence given to the person are indicated on the record. The document however, is only made public, only after the case has been resolved, otherwise it is kept private only to authorized individuals.

The Court Administration of New York is the one who is responsible for managing the criminal records of the state and this includes the arrest records. Many would think that they can conduct a nationwide criminal check but the only thing possible at the moment is a statewide search. With this, one can only find criminal records for a particular state and not that of the whole country.

Retrieval of a criminal and arrest record would mean knowing the basic information of the record being obtained. One has to fill out the search form provided by the state office with the information about the arrest to get a certified copy of the document. A $65 processing fee has to be paid in order to proceed with the retrieval process. Requests can be done personally at the state office or by sending a mail request. However, the results of a mail request will be sent only after a few days.

Delay can be avoided if the search is done over the Internet. This method has made the retrieval process easy and fast. Getting arrest records for free through the Internet is also possible. Some websites lets its users to test their system and then after a few days, users can choose to end the free trial or continue with the service by paying for it.
